FEDEV Drill Council Authorities To Effectively Manage Plastic Waste.

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development, The Foundation for Environment and Development (FEDEV) in partnership with Envirimental Law Alliance Worldwide (E-LAW) and United Cities and Councils of Cameroon (UCCC), NWR and in Collaboration with the Ministry of Decentralization and Local Development, have drilled council authorities in the North West Region on Plastic Waste Management: Laws, Policies and Actions”. 

This was during a two days training workshop for Councils in the NWR of Cameroon on the 8th and 9th of June 2023 at the conference hall of the North West Regional Assembly. Participants were representatives from councils and the Regional Assembly in which they were effectively schooled on state policies and actions in tackling plastic waste management, role of local government Authorities in plastic waste management, mainstreaming plastic waste management policies and strategies in council development plan, women and plastic waste management, developing a plastic waste management policy for councils in cameroon, compliance and enforcement of plastic related laws in Cameroon, legal framework for plastics and plastic waste management in cameroon etc.

Since 21, FEDEV has been working on Plastic justice and the project embodies research on plastic laws, monitoring and reporting plastic pollution cases, engaging relevant stakeholders in the fight against plastic pollution, holding plastic polluters accountable for their Environmental footprints and generally using advocacy and the law to fight against plastic pollution. 

According to the Executive Director of FEDEV Barrister Justice Nchunu Sama, " local authorities in cameroon are statutorily responsible for enviromental clean up sanitary inspection, waste management, spatial planning and the fight against pollution within their respective municipalities. But the rising amount of waste gabbage in our municipalities, we realize that the coucils are not engaging adequate action to combat plastic pollution and we realize that some councils are not aware of the provision of the law in relation to plastic waste management and that is the major drive of the workshop".

The participants were schooled by experts in their respective field amongst them Barrister Justice Nchunu Sama, Barrister Olivia Tamon, Justice Ignatius Fon Mbafor, Barrister Owen Achuh, Mr Pius Mbah Mbole and Barrister Electha Bih Tawah.

During the two days workshop, one Council per division presented their experiences and practices on handling plastic waste management in their municipalities. The exercise was very enriching as they learned from each other. Tubah and Nkambe councils were applauded for their outstanding projects towards plastic waste management and others were encouraged to emulate and partner with them in order to combat plastic waste management. 

The workshop ended with group sessions in which the participants presented their challenges and recommendations in regards to waste management and all the participants through their UCCC president Denis Ndang unanimously agreed to sign a Memoradum of understanding with FEDEV in order to combat plastic waste management in the region.
